Greetings Friends of St george Park.

Looking forward to 2010, we're plannning to improve our recruitment efforts and get more people on board.

The adopt-a-bed program will continue, and we're about to see some results as the daffodils are starting to show through.

Hopefully benches will be finished and we'll have some sort of celebration.

We'll try to save a historically significant wooden structure from the council wrecking ball (Gary Brentall wants to tear it down). The "Edwardian Beach Hut" wooden structure adjacent to park-keeper's house could have potential importance in the overall original park design, as it features some fine craftsmanship, and is held together by hand-wrought black iron nails. Wooden structures aren't given the same respect as their stone cousins, even though they can be as culturally significant to the community.

We're hoping to get a historian/architect to assess it, and would like to bring it back "online", maybe as a small club house for meetings, before it ignominiously gets the axe! More to follow on this later.

The last sunday of every month is still our "pitch in with the beds/benches" day (about 10am to 1 or 2ish pm), but the weather looks grim for this week-end (feb 28th 2010), so it doesn't look like it will be happening.

Plus plenty of other projects and ideas on our agenda that we hope to tackle in the future.

Our next meeting date will be annonced soon.

Our next meeting should take place in a couple of weeks time, at the Beehive center, St Ambrose church. We'll be announing the exact date as soon as availability of the center is confirmed.

Hello friends of St. George Park.

Just a quick reminder about the Thursday 26th feb. meeting at 7 pm St. Ambrose Church, Stretford road, Beehive centre.

It's on for sure, and we should have Tony Potter there along with parks playground officer John Knowlson, amongst guests, possibly others.

We had a successful first bed digging session, so we can look forward to rolling out other similar ideas, and anything else that will increase the momentum of the park restoration.

Flower Beds Sunday

Green fingers anyone? Come lend a hand...

The Friends of St George Park group are planning a session to prepare the flower beds on Sunday 15th Feb from 10pm-2pm (weather permitting), and would be pleased for anyone who is interested to come and lend a hand.

You will need to bring tools and wear appropriate clothing especially footwear, and you can come for as long as you want, hope to see some of you there.

There will be a meeting at the Bee Hive Centre at 7.30pm on Thursday 27th of March and as usual everyone is welcome.

Would you like to be involved in practical activities to improve our park? Come along. We aim to keep the meeting short.

We will be organising flower bed planting and and other practical activities and updates on behind the scenes work by the executive.

There has been much activity since our last post.

HOT OFF THE PRESS (14th March 08) There will be a walkabout TUESDAY 18th of March at 4pm at the tennis courts with one possibly 2 officers and a councillor to decide the fate of our trees and a chance to examine the councils future plans for further unnecessary mature tree removals further.

We are extremely lucky to have George as our acting chairman. He has been busy getting black listed down at the council for his strong defence of our mature trees that seem to some of us to be discarded in a way that would not be tolerated in Bath for instance. We would love to know your feelings about this and be made aware if anyone notices anti-dendric activities in the future. Call George on this one.

Members have undertaken a survey of the park benches, meetings for inquiry into adopting flower beds, fixing the benches ourselves, raising funds for these activities and for concerns about the removal of more of our mature trees. (Picture: my view of the park) It has been quite tough as we are all volunteers. A core of local people who clearly love our park bolsters us.

The only way is up.

In the future on our site you can expect reportage by other group members (copy expected, you know who you are ;) on various park issues and updates re up coming meetings to which absolutely everyone committed to the maintenance and improvement of St George Park is welcome.

Question: What should we do with mature trees that fall in our park? Some suggestions include leaving a substantial part of the log where it falls and cutting appropriate sections to use as seating!

The council has commenced a ten-week public consultation on its draft Parks and Green Space Strategy. The consultation period will end on Friday 28 September 2007. The Strategy is a 20 year investment programme to improve the city’s green spaces where you live and across the city.
